Behavior chart maker

Positive goals, a space for every day and the reward on the chart. Worded so children earn ticks for what they do, not lose them for what they don't.

Behavior charts that help rather than shame

A behavior chart is a reward chart aimed at how a child acts rather than what they get done. It works when the goals are positive and specific, and it backfires when it becomes a public record of a bad day.

    Say what to do

Every goal on a behavior chart should describe something the child can do and you can see: "Used kind words", "Listened the first time", "Gentle hands". Avoid "No shouting" and "Be good". The first is a negative, which can't be stickered; the second is an opinion.

    Catch them doing it

The chart only works if ticks happen close to the behaviour. "That was kind, go and put a sticker on" within a minute teaches more than a review at the end of the day. For younger children, keep the chart and stickers within reach.

    Never remove a tick

The moment a chart can go backwards it becomes a punishment, and children stop looking at it. A bad hour simply earns nothing. The next hour can earn again.

    Keep it short-term

Behavior charts are for a specific stretch: a new sibling, the first weeks of school, a habit you're working on. Four to six weeks, then retire it. Long-running charts become background noise, and the goal is behaviour that doesn't need a chart.

    Talk to the school

If the chart is for behaviour at school, use the same goal wording the teacher uses. Children do better with one set of expectations than two, and a home chart that mirrors the classroom one reinforces both.
