What the generator makes
One word list, up to six different sheets. Tick the ones that suit the child and the week; most teachers send home two or three, and keep the test sheet for Friday.
- Trace — each word in light grey on handwriting lines, twice, with space to write it a third time. Best for the first look at a new list.
- Copy — the word printed clearly, then two blank spaces to copy it. The classic "look, cover, write".
- Missing letters — one to three letters blanked out of each word, usually vowels, in boxes. Builds recall rather than copying.
- Word scramble — the letters mixed up, a line to write the word. Good for children who find lists boring.
- Word search — the words hidden in a grid. Easy is across and down only; Hard adds diagonals and backwards.
- Test sheet — numbered lines for the Friday test, with a score box.
The answer key goes at the end as its own page, so you can print everything and keep the last sheet. "Shuffle the puzzles" makes a new scramble and a new grid from the same words if you want a second go.
Making the list work
Ten words is the sweet spot
The generator takes up to twenty, but most weekly lists are eight to twelve, and that's what the sheets are laid out for. Longer lists simply flow onto a second page.
Type them as the child should spell them
Lower case unless the word is a name. The trace and copy sheets print the words exactly as you type them, in a clear school-style typeface with a single-storey a and g, the shapes children are taught to write.
Mix the sheets across the week
A routine that works for many families: trace or copy on Monday, missing letters on Tuesday, scramble or word search on Wednesday, copy again on Thursday, test on Friday. Five minutes a day beats twenty-five on Thursday night.
For teachers
Leave the name blank and the sheets print with a line to fill in, so one PDF covers the class. The sheets are free for classroom use. If different groups have different lists, make one PDF per group; it takes seconds.
